Renowned for their formidable roster, which boasts standout players like George Kittle, often regarded as the premier tight end in the league, the 49ers understand the importance of depth.
In a strategic move aimed at bolstering their squad, the team, according to Ian Rapoport, recently inked a deal with Brock Wright, a restricted free agent from the Detroit Lions, by extending him an offer sheet.
Wright, aged 25, entered the NFL undrafted in 2021 after completing three seasons at the University of Notre Dame. Throughout his three-year tenure with the Lions, he accumulated 43 receptions, 424 yards, and seven touchdowns, with his most productive season being in 2022 when he notched 216 yards and four touchdowns.
While Kittle showcased an outstanding performance in the 2023 season, the fact remains that he’s now 30 years old, prompting speculation about the need for the 49ers to groom his successor.
Additionally, the team faces the impending retirement of Trent Williams, their veteran starting left tackle. Williams, hailed as one of the premier players in his position for several years, is currently 35 years old and signed through the 2026 season. Although he expressed commitment to continue playing for the next few years, the 49ers recognize the importance of planning for his eventual departure.
Head coach Kyle Shanahan hinted at prioritizing upgrades to the offensive line during the upcoming draft, with a focus on positions like right tackle, center, and guard to fortify their lineup for future success.
