Newcastle United are prepared to challenge Liverpool and Aston Villa for Club Brugge defender Joel Ordonez, though a January transfer appears improbable.
Ecuadorian defender William Ordoñez continues to attract major Premier League interest, with three top-flight clubs now reportedly pursuing him.
Earlier this year, Football Insider revealed that Everton had lined up a move for the Club Brugge star, but the deal ultimately failed to materialise.
Since then, Ordoñez’s reputation has grown significantly, and he is now on the radar of Liverpool, Aston Villa, and Newcastle United.
Eddie Howe is understood to be actively seeking defensive reinforcements for Newcastle as the Magpies balance a congested fixture list following their Champions League qualification.
The club bolstered their defence in the summer with the signing of Malick Thiaw from AC Milan, but Howe remains eager to strengthen further.
Speaking on Football Insider’s Inside Track podcast, it was explained that Ordoñez is highly admired across England’s top clubs:
“Liverpool, with their defensive concerns, have shown interest, while Aston Villa and Newcastle have also been monitoring his progress closely.
He’s performed superbly for Club Brugge, playing at the top level in the Champions League, and has been instrumental for Ecuador during their successful World Cup qualification campaign.”
However, any potential move in January appears unlikely. Brugge recently secured Ordoñez on a new long-term contract until 2029, a move clearly designed to protect his value amid growing Premier League attention.
The Belgian club are expected to demand a premium fee should any side formally approach them.
Alongside his defensive targets, Howe is also exploring attacking reinforcements.
Football Insider reports that Newcastle are tracking Spanish forward Samu Aghehowa, who has been impressing at Porto.
However, the 21-year-old remains content in Portugal as he aims for a breakthrough into Spain’s national setup, suggesting a deal may not happen quickly.
In the meantime, Newcastle hope that Yoane Wissa can make an immediate impact upon his return from injury, helping to bolster their attacking options as Howe looks to build a squad capable of consistently qualifying for the Champions League in the seasons ahead.
