Everton plan fresh full-back reinforcements in January despite summer arrival of Adam Aznou
David Moyes had a clear list of transfer targets earlier this year after Everton lost several players to free agency.
However, with limited time and resources available, not every position could be strengthened during that single window — a reality Moyes has openly acknowledged.
The Toffees’ campaign has since taken a rocky turn, with their bright early-season form fading fast.
Among Everton’s nine summer arrivals was 19-year-old left-back Adam Aznou, who joined from Bayern Munich with plenty of promise.
Yet, as the season nears its midway point, the young Spaniard is still waiting to make his mark in England.
Aznou’s slow start has drawn criticism from sections of the German media, though the reasons behind his lack of minutes are becoming clearer.
Moyes has previously stated that the club always viewed Aznou as a long-term project rather than an instant starter.
“He’s got a bit to do before he’s ready for the first team,” Moyes said last month, confirming that Everton knew development time would be required.
According to The Athletic, the teenager is not considered physically prepared for Premier League football just yet.
Meanwhile, Everton News has reported that the club are exploring full-back options ahead of the January transfer window, given ongoing problems on both flanks.
Aznou’s unavailability has forced Vitaliy Mykolenko to shoulder a heavy workload, though his well-documented limitations going forward have been a growing concern.
Some reports have even suggested that Aznou is frustrated with his situation, but the team’s current lack of creativity from wide defensive areas could soon open a door for him once he’s deemed ready to compete.
Supporters have become increasingly impatient with Mykolenko’s limited attacking contribution, as Everton’s full-backs have provided little offensive support — leaving the likes of Jack Grealish and Iliman Ndiaye to bear the creative burden.
Statistically, Aznou offers a more balanced game, showing promise both defensively and in attack during his youth career.
He has also started to impress Moyes in training, reportedly performing well in duels with the in-form Ndiaye.
With just one win since August, Everton desperately need fresh energy and tactical adjustments.
If Aznou continues to progress behind the scenes, his introduction could prove to be one of the subtle but significant changes Moyes needs to spark a turnaround at Goodison Park.
