Nuno Espirito Santo’s fondness for tactical versatility has been evident throughout his West Ham United tenure.

The Portuguese coach recently explained how he swapped Max Kilman and Jean-Clair Todibo’s centre-back roles — shifting Kilman to the right and Todibo to the left — to test their adaptability and uncover hidden qualities.

His experiments have not stopped there, with Ollie Scarles playing at right-back, Aaron Wan-Bissaka featuring on the opposite flank, and El Hadji Malick Diouf trying his hand as a winger.

In attack, injuries to Niclas Füllkrug prompted Nuno to deploy Jarrod Bowen and Lucas Paquetá as makeshift strikers.

When Callum Wilson returned to the starting XI for wins over Newcastle and Burnley, Tomas Soucek emerged as another surprise option up front.

The Czech midfielder impressed with a goalscoring cameo against Newcastle before netting again in the following fixture against Burnley.

Nuno, who has faced Soucek numerous times as an opposing manager, praised the 30-year-old’s intelligent movement and determination: “It’s a nightmare stopping Tomas from getting into the box.

He recognises space and has belief not many players possess.”

The West Ham boss hailed Soucek’s contribution across 250 appearances for the club, calling him a selfless player who “gives it all, no matter the position — you could even play him full-back and he’d deliver.”

Soucek’s recent impact off the bench has earned him the tag of West Ham’s new “supersub.”

His goal against Burnley sparked a comeback completed by Callum Wilson’s equaliser and a late Kyle Walker-Peters strike.

Wilson, meanwhile, continues to defy age and injuries. The 33-year-old forward has scored twice in three Premier League starts and is now just ten goals shy of a century in the competition.

Reflecting on the Burnley win, Wilson highlighted the importance of resilience and teamwork: “We knew we had to fight hard and show character when we went behind.”

His equaliser came after Crysencio Summerville’s run and shot deflected kindly into his path. “As a striker, you’ve got to anticipate those moments,” Wilson said.

“You have to run, fight, and give your team a platform. I feel fit, strong, and happy to be contributing again.”
