Newcastle United have endured a difficult spell under Eddie Howe, but there are growing signs that change could be on the horizon as the club prepares to strengthen its squad in January.
The international break has provided a much-needed pause for reflection after what has been an underwhelming start to the Premier League campaign, especially considering their significant £249 million transfer outlay.
The Magpies’ most recent outing, a 2-0 defeat to Brentford, perfectly encapsulated their struggles.

That result leaves them languishing in 14th place in the Premier League table, a far cry from the European-chasing form they displayed last season.
Eddie Howe, clearly frustrated, pointed to a lack of focus and composure after halftime as the root of their problems. “It was a really difficult second half for us,” he admitted.
“Whatever could go wrong did go wrong. We didn’t respond to the first goal well enough, and then came the second goal and the red card, which cost us the game.
We showed a good mentality in the first half and stood up to the task, but one lapse from a throw-in changed everything.”
Defensive frailties were again exposed, with Sven Botman and Kieran Trippier struggling to contain Brentford’s attack.
Their recent performances have sparked concern among supporters who fear that Newcastle’s backline, once considered a major strength, has lost its resilience.
Despite these issues, there remains optimism within the camp. Howe and his coaching staff are determined to regroup ahead of a demanding festive period, which includes a daunting home clash against Manchester City and a crucial Champions League trip to Marseille.
Reinforcements are expected to arrive in the winter transfer window, particularly in defence, where Newcastle are looking to inject quality and depth.
According to AS, the Magpies have identified Celta Vigo defender Óscar Mingueza as a key target.
The 25-year-old, who came through Barcelona’s famed La Masia academy, has attracted interest from several Premier League clubs, including West Ham United and Aston Villa.
Celta’s financial situation and Barcelona’s 50% sell-on clause could make negotiations tricky, but with Mingueza’s contract running until 2026, a cut-price deal may be possible if Celta decide to cash in while his value remains high.
Mingueza has impressed in Spain this season, making 14 appearances while contributing one goal and three assists.
His versatility is another major draw for Howe, as he can operate both as a central defender and on the right flank, either in a wing-back or advanced midfield role.
In addition to Mingueza, Newcastle are also understood to be holding internal discussions about adding a defensive midfielder to further stabilise the team.
