England international Kobbie Mainoo has slipped significantly down the pecking order under Ruben Amorim, and that sudden drop in status has inevitably alerted several Premier League clubs ahead of the winter transfer window.

Among the sides monitoring his situation are Everton, who are aware that the young midfielder has been left deeply frustrated by the minimal game time he has received so far this season.

Mainoo has registered only 138 minutes of Premier League action, a shocking decline for a player who just months ago was considered one of Manchester United’s brightest emerging talents.

However, David Moyes and his staff may be ready to offer a solution in the months ahead, providing the minutes and responsibility he has been denied at Old Trafford.

Everton exploring their Manchester United links to secure Mainoo loan

Everton briefly assessed the possibility of signing Mainoo over the summer, and their prospects of landing him in January seemed to improve last weekend.

The 20-year-old was entirely omitted from United’s matchday squad for the 2-2 draw away to Tottenham, and he has not stepped onto the pitch since the club’s victory over Brighton on 25 October.

This cold spell marks a dramatic shift from his meteoric 2023–24 campaign, during which he scored the winning goal in the FA Cup final and earned a starting spot in the Euro 2024 final.

Yet those achievements appear distant now, as his involvement has dwindled almost completely.

Former Everton scout Bryan King, speaking exclusively to Goodison News, believes that a January move cannot be discounted.

He also highlighted the historic relationship between Everton and Manchester United, one that has facilitated multiple player movements over the years.

“Everton and Manchester United have always had close contact with players in the past,” King said.

“It would probably be a loan deal, and I wouldn’t rule out Everton as a strong option for Mainoo.

He’s an excellent player, and I don’t understand why he isn’t featuring for United. It seems to be something personal between him and the manager. He’s got the ability.

“I think he’d get plenty of games at Everton, especially with Idrissa Gueye likely heading to AFCON.”

Mainoo offers more security than Allan

Everton are also pursuing Palmeiras midfielder Allan ahead of the January window and are one of several Premier League clubs in the race for his signature.

The 21-year-old is tipped to follow the line of outstanding talents produced by Palmeiras, but at this stage, Mainoo represents the safer and more polished option for Moyes.

He has already demonstrated his effectiveness in the Premier League, while Allan—talented as he may be—would require an adjustment period.

Given Mainoo’s proven quality and suitability for Moyes’ system, he could be the ideal addition to Everton’s midfield this winter.
