West Ham’s search for a fast, dynamic, goal-scoring midfielder could well lead them to a Player of the Month standout who one pundit believes is talented enough to wear the famous white of Real Madrid.
Nuno Espirito Santo is pushing West Ham United to add pace, energy and more goal threat to their midfield ahead of the January window.
Whether the club can meet those demands remains uncertain, with Graeme Bailey reiterating that West Ham will likely need to sell before they can buy, much as they did when Mohammed Kudus was moved on in July to fund several new arrivals.
One player firmly on their radar is PSV Eindhoven star Ismael Saibari. Although his valuation is unclear, it is widely accepted that he would command a significant fee.
Journalist Ben Jacobs recently revealed that Nuno wants a midfielder capable of operating as a dynamic No.6 or No.8 who can cover ground aggressively.
Few fit that description better than Saibari, who has emerged as one of the Eredivisie’s standout performers.
Former Netherlands international Theo Janssen believes Saibari is performing at a level that could even attract elite clubs.
Dutch-Moroccan analyst Ali Boussaboun has labelled him the best player in the Eredivisie, while PSV manager Peter Bosz has argued that Saibari is even more suited to the Premier League than Liverpool’s Florian Wirtz.
Though questions have been raised about Saibari’s stocky frame, Bosz feels his physical build would serve him well in England.
Saibari’s form backs up the praise. With nine combined goals and assists in just six October matches, he claimed the Eredivisie Player of the Month award, highlighted by a stunning hat-trick against title rivals Feyenoord—his clearest signal yet that he is reaching the levels once shown by PSV graduates Cody Gakpo and Memphis Depay.
Janssen believes Saibari could one day fit into the Real Madrid squad but feels a Bundesliga move—perhaps RB Leipzig—might be a more sensible stepping stone.
However, Bailey suggests PSV could be willing to negotiate in January, as they have a history of sanctioning major mid-season sales.
The challenge for West Ham, however, will be convincing ambitious players to join a side still hovering near the relegation zone, despite improved form under Nuno.
Saibari is not the club’s only Eredivisie target. Ajax midfielder Kenneth Taylor and Feyenoord’s Quinten Timber are also on the shortlist.
Timber, whose contract expires this summer, is admired for his powerful runs from midfield and was instrumental in Feyenoord’s 2023 title win under Arne Slot.
Slot himself praised Timber’s mentality, athleticism and potential to develop into an exceptional player.
Saibari, meanwhile, remains focused on maintaining his form, telling Voetbal International that his recent consistency is finally being reflected in his goals and statistics.
With 10 goals in 17 matches from midfield, he has become one of Europe’s most intriguing mid-season targets.
