Once regarded as one of the Premier League’s most promising young forwards, the Ireland international saw his early rise stall due to a succession of injuries that hampered his development.

Everton showed interest in securing Evan Ferguson’s services during the summer, but the striker instead opted to join Roma on loan for the duration of the season.

However, with The Friedkin Group owning both Roma and another Merseyside club, attention has now shifted toward the possibility of transferring Ferguson to Everton in an unexpected January move.

Their long-standing admiration for the youngster is evident, given that they were responsible for taking him to Italy in the first place.

Despite the initial excitement surrounding his loan move, Ferguson has struggled to make an impact in Serie A.

The Brighton academy product has yet to score this season and has found it difficult to adapt to life in the Italian capital.

According to Leggo, this has led Everton to explore the option of signing him on a temporary deal this winter as they continue searching for solutions to their ongoing striker problems.

Former Everton scout Bryan King, speaking exclusively to Goodison News, suggested that Ferguson fits the profile of a traditional David Moyes player—someone with raw potential worth trying to unlock.

However, King also raised concerns about the forward’s injury history and recent form.

He questioned why Brighton have not utilised him more if he still possesses the ability that many believe he has, and highlighted his difficulties at Roma as another red flag.

King added that it is always troubling when a highly-rated young attacker moves abroad and fails to make an impression, especially when they are unable to get on the scoresheet.

Such situations often indicate deeper issues that need addressing before the player can perform consistently at a top level.

Criticism of Everton’s current striker options, particularly Beto, has intensified due to the inconsistent nature of their forward line.

Beto, while capable of strong performances, is heavily dependent on confidence and can appear ineffective during spells when goals dry up.

This inconsistency has pushed Everton to consider reinforcements in January.

However, any new arrival must represent a clear upgrade, and Ferguson’s statistics from his most recent Premier League season do not support that idea.

The Irish forward recorded a conversion rate of just eight per cent in 2024–25—significantly lower than Beto’s 16 per cent, according to Sofascore.

Adding to these concerns, Ferguson averaged more than 400 minutes per goal, raising further doubts about whether he can provide the clinical edge Everton are lacking.
