Everton are reportedly among the clubs vying to sign James Ward-Prowse from West Ham United in the January transfer window, with increasing indications that the midfielder is “almost certain” to depart the London Stadium in the new year.

Ward-Prowse has carved out an exceptional career in English football, spending over a decade at Southampton and establishing himself as one of the Premier League’s greatest-ever set-piece takers.

His consistency from free kicks and corners has earned praise from countless figures in the game, including Alan Shearer, who once described him as “world-class,” adding that if Ward-Prowse delivers a ball into the right area, “you’ll get on the end of it and you’ve got a right good chance of scoring.”

However, things have not gone according to plan for the midfielder since joining West Ham.

Despite an encouraging start to life in London, Ward-Prowse has struggled to secure a regular place in the team this season.

With his current contract running until the summer of 2027, West Ham are now expected to consider offers in January, especially as reports suggest he is no longer part of Nuno Espírito Santo’s long-term plans.

Earlier this month, journalist Dean Jones claimed that Ward-Prowse’s departure was “almost certain,” insisting there was “no way” back into West Ham’s starting XI under Nuno.

According to Jones, the club are unlikely to stand in his way, and will instead “treat him with respect and allow him the chance to move” should the right offer arrive.

Among the interested parties, Everton have emerged as the most strongly linked Premier League side.

New information now suggests that the Toffees may be prepared to offer the 31-year-old an escape route from his difficult spell in London.

Speaking to Football Insider, former scout Mick Brown highlighted Everton’s potential interest and pointed towards David Moyes’ previous working relationship with Ward-Prowse, noting that it was Moyes who originally brought him to West Ham.

“Moyes knows him well from his time at West Ham,” Brown explained.

“He felt Ward-Prowse could offer something they were missing then, and if he now believes Everton have a similar need, he may want to bring him in again.

He’ll definitely be someone on their radar. If he becomes available, Everton will be among the sides looking to sign him.”

Brown also acknowledged that Ward-Prowse’s omission from West Ham’s recent line-ups could be a sign that the midfielder simply needs a fresh start — something Everton appear “willing” to give him.

Yet Brown admitted there may be questions over whether the player is the right fit stylistically, noting that while he is a strong passer, Everton already possess players of that profile and may require more off-the-ball intensity.

Even so, the financial side of the deal could work in Everton’s favour. At 31, Ward-Prowse is no longer a long-term investment with significant resale value, but his experience, technical ability and Premier League pedigree could make him a valuable addition at a reasonable price.

He would not necessarily be a guaranteed starter, yet could strengthen Everton’s midfield depth and provide leadership in key moments.

Given Moyes’ familiarity with the player — both on a tactical and personal level — a reunion would make sense if Everton believe Ward-Prowse can contribute to their push for stability and progress.

For all involved, the positives of such a move may well outweigh the potential concerns.
