West Ham United manager Nuno Espírito Santo is preparing to bring in a new goalkeeper during the January transfer window as he seeks to steer the club away from a looming relegation fight.
It has been a miserable campaign for the Hammers, who find themselves in the bottom three ahead of Thursday’s encounter with Manchester United.
Their situation worsened after Leeds United shocked Chelsea on Wednesday, a result that cost Graham Potter his job and accelerated pressure on struggling sides around them.
Espirito Santo, appointed to rescue West Ham’s season, is already considering fresh options to reshape a squad that has underperformed.
One of his priorities is to reinforce the goalkeeping department, and he is prepared to turn to his former club, Wolves, to secure a reliable and experienced addition.
West Ham Target Wolves’ Jose Sá
Last summer, former boss Potter invested heavily in the goalkeeping area, bringing in Mads Hermansen from Leicester City in a deal exceeding £20 million.
However, the Danish shot-stopper quickly fell out of favour and lost his place to Alphonse Areola.
Despite the change, the French goalkeeper has been unable to stabilise the team’s form, with West Ham managing just two victories in nine matches since he reclaimed the No.1 spot.
According to Football Insider, the club is now weighing up a move for Portuguese international José Sá, who has recently slipped down the pecking order at Wolves.
Earning £75,000 per week and contracted until 2027, Sá has been displaced by Sam Johnstone and could be available if the right offer comes in.
West Ham are said to be “closely monitoring” the 32-year-old as a potential short-term solution with proven Premier League pedigree.
Hermansen’s West Ham Future in Doubt
Hermansen arrived in east London following an impressive season with Leicester, even though the Foxes were relegated to the Championship.
His performances attracted interest from several clubs, but West Ham ultimately secured his signature hoping he would become their long-term No.1.
Unfortunately, the move has not unfolded as either party envisioned.
Should the Hammers push ahead with their pursuit of Sá, it would likely signal the end of Hermansen’s brief spell at the London Stadium.
The club would almost certainly consider offloading him to recover part of the sizeable investment made just six months ago, especially if Nuno prefers a keeper he trusts from his Wolves tenure.
