Tottenham Hotspur fans have enjoyed watching some exceptional attacking players over the years, with icons such as Heung-min Son, Teddy Sheringham and Harry Kane leaving a lasting mark on the club.
Kane, now 32, became Spurs’ all-time top scorer with 280 goals—208 of those in the Premier League, second only to Alan Shearer.
Yet Tottenham’s lack of silverware ultimately contributed to his 2023 exit, meaning Thomas Frank has never had the chance to work with the prolific forward.
Frank now wants to shape his own attacking era at Spurs, and the January transfer window offers an opportunity to bring in a top-level forward.
One name heavily linked with the club in recent months is Porto’s Sami Aghehowa.
The 21-year-old has been in outstanding form at the start of the 2025/26 season, scoring 13 times in his first 22 appearances.
Porto, however, are reluctant to sell and have placed an €80m (£70m) valuation on their young star.
Another striker on Tottenham’s radar is Crystal Palace’s Jean-Philippe Mateta.
Reports in Spain suggest Spurs are seriously considering a January bid as the Frenchman’s contract negotiations at Selhurst Park appear to have stalled.
With his current deal running until 2027, Palace may soon face pressure to sell to avoid long-term contract risk.
Frank’s interest in Mateta aligns with the profile of attackers he relied on during his Brentford tenure.
There, he developed Bryan Mbeumo into one of the Premier League’s most consistent forwards, with the Cameroonian scoring 20 league goals in 2024/25.
Frank attempted to reunite with Mbeumo after joining Spurs, but the forward instead chose a move to Manchester United, leaving the Dane still searching for a new talisman.
Although Mohammed Kudus and Richarlison have contributed well this season, Mateta could become the focal point Frank desires.
The Frenchman has scored 30 league goals across the past two full seasons and already has seven goals from 15 matches in the 2025/26 campaign.
His underlying numbers are equally impressive: 1.6 shots on target per 90 places him among the top 7% in the league, and he has succeeded with 53% of his dribbles while completing 75% of his crosses.
Crucially, Mateta offers strong hold-up play, winning 2.5 aerial duels per 90.
This would give Spurs a reliable focal point, improving their presence in the box and linking attacking moves more effectively—qualities the club has lacked since Kane’s departure.
While stylistically different to Mbeumo, Mateta shares the same clinical edge, and securing him in January could finally give Frank the elite-level forward he needs to shape his Tottenham side.
