Newcastle United’s hierarchy are expected to firmly fend off renewed interest from Manchester City in Tino Livramento when the January transfer window opens, with head coach Eddie Howe having made his stance abundantly clear.

Howe has informed senior figures at the club that he sees the former Chelsea academy product as a cornerstone of his long-term project on Tyneside and wants the squad built around him.

During early discussions regarding squad planning and future recruitment, Howe stressed to sporting director Ross Wilson how vital it is that both Livramento and Lewis Hall remain at the club.

Manchester City are long-standing admirers of Livramento, but Newcastle moved quickly to shut down any advances last summer, warning Pep Guardiola’s side that the defender was simply not available for transfer.

Despite that message, City have continued to monitor Livramento’s situation closely.

Newcastle, however, are hopeful the 23-year-old will commit his future to the club by signing a new contract that would extend his stay beyond his current deal, which runs until 2028.

Even if City were to test Newcastle’s resolve again in January, insiders insist it would take an “astronomical” bid for the Magpies to even consider opening discussions.

A similar approach was taken in the case of Alexander Isak last summer, when Liverpool’s initial offers were dismissed as insufficient before they were ultimately forced to put £125 million on the table.

Livramento’s situation differs slightly, though, as the England international is understood to be happy on Tyneside and keen to stay put, leaving negotiations to be handled by his father and agent.

That said, figures within recruitment circles have spoken about City potentially preparing an enticing proposal for Livramento, which could involve a significant cash sum alongside goalkeeper James Trafford.

Newcastle attempted to sign Trafford from Burnley last summer, tabling a £27 million bid, but were beaten to his signature when City activated a buy-back clause to bring him back to the Etihad.

Since then, City have strengthened their goalkeeping department further by signing Gianluigi Donnarumma for £30 million, limiting Trafford’s opportunities for regular first-team football.

Even so, sources close to Newcastle maintain that a fee in the region of £100 million may still fall short of convincing the club to part with Livramento.

After the recent Champions League clash with Marseille at the Velodrome, which ended in a narrow 2-1 defeat for the Magpies, there was a sense of admiration from the home support.

One Marseille fan remarked that Newcastle were among the most exciting sides he had seen at the stadium, singling out Livramento, Hall and Sandro Tonali for praise.

A similar sentiment was echoed on the following European trip to Leverkusen, where local supporters spoke openly about Newcastle’s ambition and spending power.

Some even suggested they expected Eddie Howe’s side to progress beyond the last-16 stage, a notable compliment given Bayer Leverkusen’s own experience in European competition.

Meanwhile, Newcastle are awaiting confirmation over their FA Cup third-round fixture against Bournemouth.

The home tie has not been selected for live television coverage and was absent from the broadcast list released on Friday.

However, there remains a possibility the date could yet be altered, as numerous fixtures were moved from their original slots last season.

The club have confirmed that all third-round ties are scheduled for the weekend of Saturday, January 10, 2026, with a final date to be announced in due course.
