Newcastle United’s summer recruitment has delivered mixed results, but the impact of their two German arrivals has been unquestionably outstanding.
Malick Thiaw has proven to be one of the standout signings of the season, while Nick Woltemade has taken many by surprise with how seamlessly he has settled into Premier League football after being thrust straight into the spotlight.
Woltemade’s impact is especially impressive when you consider the circumstances of his arrival.
Newcastle were forced to shatter their club transfer record to secure the 23-year-old, with the deal potentially rising to around £69 million.
At the time, the fee sparked widespread debate, particularly in Germany, where Bayern Munich had pursued the striker throughout the summer but ultimately refused to meet Stuttgart’s valuation.
Newcastle’s late move did not go down well with some Bundesliga figures.
The transfer reportedly frustrated Bayern officials, and representatives close to the situation were quick to criticise the Magpies, questioning both the timing of the deal and the amount spent.
Some even went as far as labelling Newcastle reckless for committing such a significant sum.
However, that criticism has not been shared by everyone.
Former Germany international Rudi Völler has since offered a very different perspective, suggesting Newcastle may actually have secured exceptional value for money.
Speaking to Sky Germany, Völler explained that Woltemade’s talent had been obvious for years, particularly during his time in the Under-21 setup.
He noted that discussion around the hefty transfer fee has already faded, largely because of the striker’s performances, adding that the deal now looks like a bargain given the quality Woltemade has shown.
Völler’s assessment carries weight. As Woltemade continues to find the net and influence games, the narrative around Newcastle overspending has quickly lost momentum.
Supporters were well aware that the club’s need for a reliable striker meant paying a premium was unavoidable.
In truth, if Newcastle overpaid for a forward this summer, it arguably was not Woltemade. While Yoane Wissa is a strong player, Brentford did extremely well to command £55 million for a 29-year-old.
By comparison, paying close to £70 million for a 23-year-old striker with elite potential now feels entirely justified.
