Tottenham Hotspur are prepared to significantly increase the wages of one of their most important players as they look to secure the long-term future of a potential club captain, sources have confirmed.
While a busy January transfer window is expected in north London, the most crucial piece of business may not involve a new arrival, but rather ensuring a key figure already at the club remains committed.
Spurs are keen to fast-track new contract negotiations with central defender Micky van de Ven early in the new year, TEAMtalk understands.
The Dutch international is currently tied to Tottenham until 2029, meaning there is no immediate risk of him leaving the club.
That said, his rapid rise has not gone unnoticed, with European heavyweights such as Real Madrid and Bayern Munich having monitored his situation over the past year.
Since arriving from Wolfsburg in 2023, Van de Ven has developed into one of the Premier League’s most highly rated defenders, combining pace, composure and consistency to become a cornerstone of Tottenham’s back line.
Sources indicate that Spurs CEO Vinai Venkatesham initiated preliminary discussions with Van de Ven’s representatives during the summer.

Tottenham are understood to be prepared to offer Van de Ven a contract on par with current club captain Cristian Romero. Romero signed a new deal in August which made him the highest earner at the club.
The Argentine defender reportedly earns around £150,000 per week as a base salary, with performance-related bonuses pushing the figure closer to £200,000 per week. A comparable structure is now being lined up for Van de Ven.
At present, the Dutchman earns in the region of £90,000 per week, meaning a new agreement would almost double his current wages and underline his importance to the club’s long-term plans.
Although Spurs are open to spending in January if the right opportunities arise, tying down their most influential players remains a top priority, and Van de Ven is viewed as central to that strategy.
Club insiders believe Van de Ven has the attributes required to captain Tottenham in the future and see him as a leader.
