Quite simply, Juventus do not have the financial muscle required to complete a deal of that magnitude.
Italian outlets, in particular, seem unable to resist linking Tonali with a return to Serie A whenever the transfer window approaches.
Gazzetta dello Sport has again raised his name while outlining Juventus’ plans, although they described the move as “the dream of Sandro Tonali.”
That wording arguably sums up how realistic the idea actually is at this stage.
Tonali appears settled on Tyneside, and it is no secret that Italian clubs no longer possess the spending power needed to prise elite players away from the Premier League.
In fact, very few European leagues can now compete with England financially, with Spain perhaps the only exception, and even then it is largely limited to Barcelona and Real Madrid.
While speculation continues, Tonali’s recent form has dipped, though he is far from alone in that respect.
Several Newcastle players have struggled to hit their usual standards, contributing to a collective downturn in performances.
At this point, an injection of fresh faces could be exactly what the squad needs to spark some momentum. Other solutions have yet to deliver results, and the team appears short on confidence.
Newcastle return to action on Tuesday night with a trip to Burnley. Failure to claim three points at Turf Moor would feel like a hammer blow, and it would be difficult to maintain much optimism about the remainder of the season.
