Newcastle United are intensifying their transfer plans as they look to strengthen the squad, with the club reportedly registering serious interest in a potential summer move for a high-profile England international who will be aiming to secure a place in his country’s squad for the 2026 World Cup.

The Magpies have experienced an up-and-down start to the Premier League season and will be keen to find greater consistency in the months ahead.

Domestic form has been patchy at times, leaving Eddie Howe’s side searching for momentum, but there have still been positives to draw upon.

Their EFL Cup run has offered encouragement, with a semi-final on the horizon providing hope of silverware and a morale boost during an otherwise uneven campaign.

“With Yoane, we have to be careful,” Howe explained. “He is still quite early in his return to full fitness.

He did very well in his one start against Fulham, and I was really pleased with what he gave us. There will definitely be more opportunities for him.”

He admitted that Wissa is not yet in a position to start matches consistently but expressed hope that his condition can be managed gradually to allow him to reach that level later in the season.

AZ Alkmaar midfielder Kees Smit has emerged as a notable target, with a potential £22 million move during the winter window considered a genuine possibility as the club looks to bolster its options.
