Sky Sports journalist Florian Plettenberg has provided a fresh update on West Ham United’s pursuit of an “incredible” English defender, who is understood to be open to a move to the London Stadium.
The Hammers endured another damaging afternoon at the weekend, as Wolverhampton Wanderers claimed their first Premier League win of the campaign with a convincing 3-0 triumph over West Ham at Molineux.
The result has plunged Nuno Espirito Santo’s side deeper into trouble as their struggles continue.
After the latest defeat, West Ham find themselves four points behind 17th-placed Nottingham Forest, having managed to pick up just 14 points across the entire season so far.
That worrying return underlines the urgency for reinforcements during the January transfer window, particularly at the back.
Defender Max Kilman came in for heavy criticism following the loss, producing a disappointing display that earned him a SofaScore rating of just 5.9, the lowest of any player on the pitch.
His form has been under scrutiny for some time, with Jamie Carragher previously questioning Kilman’s leadership and influence, especially after failing to do enough to stop Igor Thiago from scoring against Brentford earlier in the campaign.
Speaking about Kilman, Carragher said: “He’s the leader at the back for West Ham. I used to really like him at Wolves, but he probably didn’t have that responsibility there.
When you are the main centre-half, you have to dominate those moments.”
With Kilman struggling to impose himself, the addition of a new central defender could prove crucial before the transfer window shuts.
Plettenberg has now revealed that West Ham are continuing to track Toulouse centre-back Charlie Cresswell.
Posting on X, the Sky Sports reporter stated that the Irons are closely monitoring the Englishman’s situation, although no formal talks have been opened at this stage.
Well-known insider ExWHUemployee has previously indicated that Cresswell is keen on a switch to east London, while other reports suggest a fee of around £18 million may be required to secure his signature.
Described as “incredible” by scout Jacek Kulig, Cresswell has caught the eye in Ligue 1 over the past year, ranking highly for several key defensive metrics compared to his peers at centre-back.
Meanwhile, Sky Sports’ Dougie Critchley has highlighted the underwhelming performances of Konstantinos Mavropanos, Jean-Clair Todibo and Kilman this season, claiming they have all fallen “well short” of their usual standards.
Having conceded a league-high 41 goals, West Ham clearly need defensive reinforcements.
Cresswell’s form in France suggests he could help steady the ship, but the club will be hoping their current struggles do not deter him from making the move.
