Vitaliy Mykolenko has recently been the subject of speculation regarding a possible departure from Everton, after Turkish giants Galatasaray opened talks with the Merseyside club over a potential transfer.
The Istanbul-based side, who are 25-time domestic champions, explored the possibility of bringing the Ukrainian defender to Turkey, but negotiations ultimately collapsed.
Galatasaray were unwilling to match the valuation set by Everton, believed to be firmly backed by David Moyes and the club’s hierarchy.
Following the breakdown in discussions, it now appears increasingly likely that Mykolenko will remain at the Hill Dickinson Stadium, with a fresh development suggesting the situation could prove financially advantageous for the Toffees in the long run.
Reports indicate that Mykolenko is close to committing his future to Everton, despite his previous contract being due to expire in the summer.
According to a report published by Sport.ua on 5 January, Ukrainian journalist Igor Burbas has revealed that Everton have moved swiftly to extend the defender’s deal until the summer of 2027.
This update suggests that both the club and the player are eager to continue working together.
The report adds that the 25-year-old is keen to remain competing at the highest level, a stance that aligns with Moyes’ earlier comments that Everton were determined to retain his services.
From Everton’s perspective, securing Mykolenko on a new contract carries significant financial importance.
Had his deal expired without renewal, the club would have risked losing him for nothing. From 1 January, he would even have been eligible to agree a pre-contract with an overseas side, potentially walking away on a free transfer in the summer.
Since arriving on Merseyside, Mykolenko has made 141 appearances for Everton, contributing four goals and three assists. He has also established himself as a key figure for his country, earning 51 caps for the Ukraine national team.
By extending his contract, Everton ensure that any future decision to sell the left-back would generate a substantial transfer fee, rather than leaving empty-handed.
