Newcastle United continue to battle injury concerns as the demanding winter period sets in, but there are encouraging signs emerging from the treatment room
Newcastle United have received a timely boost ahead of their upcoming Premier League clash with Leeds United at St James’ Park, with positive news emerging regarding Jacob Murphy’s fitness.
However, Anthony Elanga is not yet ready to return to action and will remain unavailable for the weekend fixture.
Elanga has been absent since Newcastle’s 2-2 draw with Chelsea on December 20, when the Swedish winger was forced off after taking a heavy blow to his knee.
His absence has reduced Eddie Howe’s options out wide, with Anthony Gordon, Murphy and Harvey Barnes serving as the club’s primary attacking outlets from the flanks in recent weeks.
While the situation is improving, Elanga’s recovery has taken slightly longer than initially anticipated.
The Leeds match has come too soon for Elanga, while defensive pair Emil Krafth and Dan Burn also continue their rehabilitation at the club’s Benton training base.
Murphy, meanwhile, was substituted during Sunday’s impressive 2-0 victory over Crystal Palace, prompting some concern over his availability.
Speaking about Murphy’s condition, Howe offered reassurance. “He’s had a scan and the news is good,” the Newcastle boss explained. “There’s no major injury, so it’s probably just fatigue.
His physical numbers during the game were outstanding, so we’re hopeful he’ll be available, fingers crossed.”
Providing an update on Elanga, Howe added: “We don’t think he’s quite there yet. It’s just taking a little bit longer in the final stages than we hoped, but it won’t be long now.”
While it remains uncertain whether Elanga will be fit in time for the FA Cup third-round tie against AFC Bournemouth, there is optimism he could return for the first leg of the Carabao Cup semi-final against Manchester City next Tuesday.
In defence, Tino Livramento and Kieran Trippier have returned from injury, though Lewis Miley could once again be trusted at right-back. Howe was full of praise for the youngster, highlighting his adaptability and composure.
He noted Miley’s impressive performances, particularly his ability on the ball in tight situations, stressing how valuable his contribution has been during a period of limited options.
