Malick Thiaw was substituted at the break as Newcastle United edged past Leeds United in a dramatic seven-goal clash.
Newcastle United defender Malick Thiaw has apologised after enduring a difficult night despite the Magpies’ dramatic 4-3 Premier League victory over Leeds United at St James’ Park.
Eddie Howe’s side produced a remarkable comeback, coming from behind on three separate occasions before Harvey Barnes fired home a stunning winner in the 102nd minute.
The goal sent the home crowd into raptures and was confirmed as the latest winning strike in Premier League history.
The result also marked Newcastle’s third successive league win for the first time this season, lifting them up to sixth place in the table.
However, it proved to be a challenging outing for Thiaw. Newcastle went into the break trailing 2-1, with Brenden Aaronson opening the scoring in the 32nd minute after the German defender slipped at a crucial moment.
Barnes briefly restored parity, but Leeds regained the lead in first-half stoppage time when Dominic Calvert-Lewin converted from the penalty spot following a handball decision against Thiaw.
Already on a yellow card after a mistimed challenge on James Justin early in the match, Thiaw was withdrawn at half-time, with Sven Botman introduced in his place.
Howe later explained the decision was made to protect the player and ensure Newcastle kept all 11 men on the pitch.
“It was a really tough 45 minutes for him,” Howe admitted.
“He’s been excellent for us overall, but the situation meant we couldn’t risk him being sent off. The priority was staying competitive in the game.”
Thankfully for Thiaw, his mistakes did not ultimately derail Newcastle’s chances.
Joelinton levelled the scores early in the second half, though Aaronson struck again in the 79th minute to restore Leeds’ advantage.
What followed was a breathtaking finale, as Newcastle scored twice in stoppage time to seal an unforgettable victory.
After Aaronson handled Lewis Hall’s cross inside the penalty area, Bruno Guimarães calmly converted from the spot to make it 3-3. Barnes then completed the comeback moments later with a decisive finish.
Despite being largely impressive since arriving from AC Milan in a £35 million summer transfer, Thiaw felt compelled to address his performance.
Posting on Instagram after the match, the 24-year-old wrote: “Incredible mentality from the team. THANK YOU +3. That was a total blackout from my side — sorry for that!”
