Everton Step Up January Recruitment as Moyes Targets European Return
David Moyes has maintained that qualifying for Europe is Everton’s objective, and at the halfway stage of the campaign, the Toffees find themselves only a handful of points outside the top seven.
With that in mind, there is a growing belief that adding a bit more quality during the current window could make that ambition realistic before the season concludes.
According to Alan Myers, Everton are planning to strengthen in three key areas, with Moyes keen to bring in a striker, a midfielder and a full-back to bolster his options.
Against that backdrop, a new report has linked Everton with a full-back regarded as one of the most effective dribblers in European football.
Brooke Norton-Cuffy, currently on the books at Serie A side Genoa, has emerged as a potential target as Moyes looks to inject more attacking threat from the right side of defence.
The Everton manager is understood to want a more adventurous right-back, particularly with Jake O’Brien struggling to make the same impact this season.
O’Brien’s limited contribution going forward has attracted criticism, and his long-term role at the club appears more likely to be in central defence rather than out wide.
Norton-Cuffy, however, would represent a natural upgrade. Data from FBref shows he ranks in the top nine per cent across Europe for successful take-ons per 90 minutes when compared to players in the same position.
That statistic underlines his ability to drive the ball forward from deep areas and consistently take on defenders, something Everton have lacked on the right flank.
However, Norton-Cuffy is not the only option under consideration. Everton have also been linked with Genk’s Zakaria El Ouahdi, although Crystal Palace are monitoring that situation.
In addition, Moyes’ recruitment team have been keeping tabs on Wesley, while Sevilla defender Juanlu Sanchez remains on Everton’s radar.
Despite links, Everton’s focus remains on securing a centre-forward, and progress on defensive targets may follow once that priority is resolved.
