Newcastle United may look to bolster their squad with one of Europe’s most exciting young prospects in the coming weeks and months, with Club Brugge midfielder Aleksandar Stankovic reportedly emerging as a potential target.
The Serbian youngster is said to be admired for his versatility, something that could prove invaluable as injuries continue to disrupt Eddie Howe’s plans.
The Magpies are currently enjoying a strong run in the Premier League, having secured three victories in their last four matches.
That upturn in form has lifted them to within touching distance of the Champions League places, reigniting belief that a return to Europe’s elite competition is achievable this season.
Despite that momentum, Newcastle’s injury problems are starting to mount, particularly in key areas of the squad.
As a result, Howe may be tempted to move early in the market to ensure he has enough depth to sustain a top-four challenge and prepare for a demanding campaign next term.
According to a report from FootballFanCast, Newcastle are “considering” a move for Stankovic following concerns over the fitness of club captain Bruno Guimaraes.
Rather than rushing into a short-term solution, the club are believed to be focused on recruiting players who can contribute over the long haul.
Stankovic fits that profile, offering flexibility as a natural defensive midfielder who is also capable of operating in central defence when required.
Now 20 years old, Stankovic is the son of Inter Milan legend Dejan Stankovic and was born in Italy.
He developed within Inter’s youth system at the San Siro but struggled to break into the first team, prompting a permanent switch to Club Brugge in search of regular football.
That decision has paid dividends. In Belgium, Stankovic has rapidly built a reputation, starting all of Brugge’s Champions League matches this season.
He has also made his mark in front of goal, finding the net in midweek action against Kairat Almaty and previously scoring against Rangers during the qualifying rounds.
On the international stage, he became Serbia’s youngest goalscorer in a World Cup qualifier in over a decade.
Newcastle’s need for reliable cover could make Stankovic an attractive option, although Inter Milan are reportedly expected to activate a £20 million buy-back clause.
Even so, the report suggests Inter may simply look to sell him on for profit, giving Newcastle a clear indication of the minimum fee required to secure his signature.
Breaking into Newcastle’s midfield would be no easy task, with Bruno Guimaraes, Sandro Tonali and Joelinton firmly established, while Lewis Miley continues to push for a regular role.
However, opportunities may arise in defence. Fabian Schar, Jamaal Lascelles and Dan Burn are all into their thirties, Sven Botman has endured repeated injury setbacks, and Malick Thiaw remains the only consistently fit long-term option.
That scenario could allow Stankovic to carve out a meaningful role if he makes the move to St James’ Park.
