Newcastle United opted to loan out defender Matt Targett to Middlesbrough last summer for the final year of his contract, following a period in which he had slipped down the pecking order at St James’ Park.

The left-back arrived on Tyneside in 2022 in a deal worth £15 million but struggled to cement a regular place in Eddie Howe’s side.

Across the previous two Premier League campaigns, the 30-year-old managed just five league appearances, leaving him firmly on the fringes of the first team.

As a result, Targett was deemed surplus to requirements and allowed to move to the Riverside Stadium, where he has since enjoyed a return to consistent first-team football.

His experience has proven valuable for Middlesbrough as they push for promotion, giving him the regular minutes that were no longer available at Newcastle.

Despite this, speculation has emerged over a potential recall. Howe had earlier played down the idea of bringing Targett back, but Newcastle’s defensive situation has become increasingly stretched.

Injuries to Tino Livramento, Emil Krafth and Fabian Schär have left the Magpies short of options at the back, particularly on the left side.

With Lewis Hall currently the only fully fit natural left-back, recalling Targett as cover appears a logical contingency.

When asked whether Newcastle could activate the recall clause before the deadline, Howe admitted the matter remained under consideration.

Speaking to reporters, he explained that discussions would continue right up until the close of the transfer window, suggesting the door has not been fully closed on Targett’s return.

Elsewhere, Howe has tempered expectations regarding January recruitment.

The Newcastle boss reiterated that he does not anticipate any new signings this month, a stance that may frustrate supporters amid a disappointing league campaign.

In terms of departures, Howe confirmed that club captain Jamaal Lascelles could still leave before the deadline if the right opportunity arises.
