Tottenham Hotspur captain Cristian Romero has once again found himself at the centre of controversy, with Spurs legend Chris Waddle claiming the Argentine defender has “never really wanted to be at the club.”
Romero appeared to direct criticism towards Tottenham’s ownership after the January transfer window closed on Monday.
Speaking following Spurs’ clash with Pep Guardiola’s side, the centre-back described it as “unbelievable” and “disgraceful” that head coach Thomas Frank had only 11 senior players available for selection.
Romero himself was reportedly feeling unwell at the time, but his comments still raised eyebrows given his role as club captain.
This is not the first time the 27-year-old has spoken out publicly. Earlier in the season, after a defeat to Bournemouth, Romero took to social media to express frustration with the club’s hierarchy.
In a strongly worded post, he suggested that those in charge rarely step forward during difficult periods, claiming they only appear when results are positive “to tell a few lies.”
Although he later deleted the reference to “lies,” the damage had already been done, with many viewing the remarks as a direct criticism of the Spurs board.
Chris Waddle has now weighed in on Romero’s latest outburst, offering a blunt assessment of the situation.
While acknowledging that Romero is known for speaking his mind, Waddle questioned whether such public criticism is appropriate for a captain.
According to Waddle, leadership requires diplomacy, especially during challenging moments.
He pointed out that captains in the past often attempted to ease tensions rather than escalate them publicly.
Waddle also suggested that while managers frequently shoulder the blame during poor runs of form, Tottenham’s players have hardly covered themselves in glory this season, describing the squad’s performances as inconsistent overall.
Although Waddle believes Spurs are unlikely to mount a title challenge this year, he expects them to finish significantly higher in the table than their current position.
On paper, he feels the squad looks strong and sizeable, but he questioned whether the overall quality is sufficient to compete at the very highest level. In his view, it falls short.
Turning specifically to Romero, Waddle admitted he was surprised when the defender signed a new four-year contract and was handed the captaincy.
He suggested that Romero sometimes carries himself as though he believes he is above the club, adding that it has often seemed as though the World Cup winner’s long-term commitment to Tottenham has been uncertain.
With Spurs continuing to struggle for consistency in the Premier League, speculation about Romero’s future is growing.
Reports from Argentina this week have indicated that the defender could depart the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium this summer. Interest is believed to be strongest from La Liga, with Real Madrid frequently linked over the past few years.
The Spanish giants are expected to strengthen at centre-back and have also been associated with Liverpool’s Ibrahima Konaté.
Tottenham may also face interest in Romero’s defensive partner, Micky van de Ven, whose performances have attracted admirers across Europe.
While Romero’s talent is widely recognised, questions remain over whether his fiery temperament — both on and off the pitch — aligns with the unity Spurs need if they are to rebuild and move forward successfully.
