Following their promotion to the Premier League for the 2025/26 season, Leeds United knew that smart recruitment would be essential to avoid an immediate return to the Championship.
Manager Daniel Farke, who had previously struggled to keep Norwich City in the top flight, was entrusted with guiding the club to safety.
A significant summer investment of £90 million brought several new faces to Elland Road, and the impact has been relatively positive. Leeds currently sit 15th in the table, three points clear of the relegation zone, with eight games remaining.
This position places them in a strong position to secure survival and build momentum under Farke’s leadership heading into next season.
However, not all signings have delivered as hoped. One player who appears unlikely to remain at the club beyond this campaign is Facundo Buonanotte.
The Argentine attacking midfielder joined on loan from Brighton during the January transfer window after an underwhelming spell at Chelsea earlier in the season. His move to Leeds was expected to reignite his form, but that has not materialised.
Buonanotte has struggled for game time, managing just 24 minutes of Premier League action and making only one start, which came in an FA Cup match against Birmingham City.
Notably, he has not been included in a matchday squad since the draw against Chelsea in mid-February, suggesting he has fallen completely out of favour.
His loan spell has therefore been largely ineffective and is expected to end quietly.
The club’s heavy recruitment has also impacted members of last season’s promotion-winning squad. Sam Byram, once a regular contributor, has barely featured in recent months.
Despite making 39 appearances last season, he has played just seven minutes in the league this term, alongside a brief FA Cup outing, indicating a sharp decline in his role.
Similarly, striker Joel Piroe has seen his importance diminish dramatically.
After scoring 19 league goals and finishing as the Championship’s top scorer last season, he has made only 13 league appearances this campaign, with just two starts.
Limited opportunities and inconsistent performances, including a missed penalty in the FA Cup, have seen him drop behind in-form forwards Dominic Calvert-Lewin and Lukas Nmecha.
With just 17 minutes of Premier League football to his name this season, Piroe’s situation mirrors Buonanotte’s.
Both players now appear surplus to requirements, and their expected departures this summer highlight the harsh realities of Leeds’ push to remain competitive at the highest level.
