West Ham Poised to Pounce on Injury-Hit Forest Star Awoniyi – Is He the Next Antonio?

West Ham United are reportedly interested in securing the services of Nottingham Forest striker Taiwo Awoniyi ahead of the summer transfer window. During a recent Q&A session, The Athletic’s Daniel Taylor revealed that the Hammers “still like” the Nigerian forward, who could be available this summer.

David Moyes had expressed a keen interest in signing Awoniyi back in January. While the move did not materialize and Moyes has since departed the club, admiration for the 26-year-old striker remains among key figures at West Ham. It is yet to be determined whether the club will make a formal bid for Awoniyi, though new manager Julen Lopetegui has made it clear that acquiring a striker is a top priority.

Awoniyi’s 2023/24 season was challenging due to a series of injuries. After undergoing surgery to correct a groin problem, he missed up to 12 games between mid-November and late January. Despite these setbacks, Awoniyi was instrumental in Nottingham Forest’s successful bid to stay in the Premier League, contributing six goals and three assists in 20 league appearances.

The Nigerian forward’s physical presence, speed, and goal-scoring abilities have caught the eye of West Ham’s management. With Michail Antonio approaching the latter stages of his career, Awoniyi is seen as a potential successor who can fill the attacking void. Antonio’s blend of power and pace has been crucial for the Hammers, and Awoniyi’s similar attributes make him a suitable replacement.

For Nottingham Forest, the possible sale of Awoniyi would provide significant funds that could be reinvested in the squad. Manager Nuno Espirito Santo faces the task of balancing the need for financial prudence with maintaining a competitive team. While losing Awoniyi would be a blow, it could also offer the club a chance to bring in new talent and reinforce other areas of the squad.

The summer transfer window is fast approaching, and Taiwo Awoniyi’s situation is one of the key stories to watch. With West Ham United’s interest reaffirmed and Lopetegui’s clear intent to strengthen his squad, a move for Awoniyi could be imminent. Forest fans will be eager to see how this saga unfolds, as the club navigates a crucial period of transition and planning for the future.
