Opinion:Leeds United Targeted £18m Premier League Player Last Summer; They Should Pursue Him Again
Leeds United might face a similar challenge in signing new players as they did last summer.
Last year, the Whites attempted to sign several players but were thwarted by interest from Premier League clubs, and this scenario could repeat itself.
One early example is their interest in re-signing former loanee Joe Rodon. Leeds is determined to bring him back to Elland Road, but competition from the newly promoted sides could complicate matters without Premier League funding.
Unlike last summer, some players might now see Leeds as a stepping stone to Premier League football through a promotion campaign rather than a direct jump to the top flight.
Last summer, Leeds unsuccessfully pursued Cameron Archer, Gustavo Hamer, and Luke Thomas, who chose Sheffield United instead. Sheffield United, however, was relegated and will start next season with a points deduction. Thomas returned to Leicester City in January, and Archer’s transfer included an automatic buyback clause for Aston Villa upon relegation.
Sheffield United spent around £18 million on Archer, who only scored four goals in 30 appearances. It’s unlikely he’ll command a similar fee again. Leeds should monitor Villa’s decisions regarding Archer, as another loan spell might be possible. Archer excelled in his previous Championship loans at Middlesbrough and Preston North End, and Leeds desperately need a proven number nine.
Patrick Bamford’s limited availability due to form and fitness issues left a void in Leeds’ striking options last season. Reports suggest Leeds is open to selling Bamford this summer, with transfer insider Graeme Bailey hinting at a possible overhaul of their strikers. Joel Piroe struggled as a lone number nine, and it will be intriguing to see how Daniel Farke utilizes him next season.
Alongside potential signings like Archer, Mateo Joseph merits a more significant role and has been diligently preparing during the off-season.
