Tim Iroegbunam is considered to have Everton as the “perfect destination” to secure more regular first-team football, as reported by the Daily Mail.
According to the newspaper’s website on June 18, Aston Villa is in discussions with Everton over a “relatively cheap” deal worth around £10 million for the midfielder. The 20-year-old Iroegbunam aims for increased playing time after making only 15 appearances under Unai Emery last season. With Everton interested, this move appears ideal for the English youngster.
The Athletic reports that personal terms are expected to be easily agreed upon, which adds to the likelihood of the transfer.
In contrast, Amadou Onana is “increasingly” likely to leave Goodison Park, with Everton expected to “cash in for big money” due to interest from multiple clubs, including Arsenal, though no advanced negotiations are reported yet.
Since Onana, 21, was not a guaranteed starter for Sean Dyche towards the end of last season, Iroegbunam’s immediate inclusion in the starting lineup isn’t certain. However, if Onana departs for a significant fee, it would clear space for new midfielders like Iroegbunam.
Additionally, Andre Gomes’ contract expiration has further reduced Everton’s midfield options. This leaves Idrissa Gana Gueye, crucial in the latter part of the campaign but turning 35 soon, and James Garner as the likely regular starters, with Abdoulaye Doucouré possibly moving into a deeper role.
This scenario supports Iroegbunam’s ambition for more Premier League action at Everton, despite the substantial faith required in him after only two starts and a total of 12 top-flight games. However, his full season in the Championship with QPR adds valuable experience. Comparatively, Garner joined Everton with just two Premier League substitute appearances and significant second-tier experience from Manchester United.
Although selling a player for a high price and signing a new one for less involves some risk, it seems that both Dyche and Iroegbunam believe it’s a risk worth taking.
