JUST IN: Italy International Expressed Dream to Play for West Ham in 2022; Now Lopetegui Wants to Sign Him

West Ham United target Riccardo Calafiori made some intriguing comments about the club two years ago.

West Ham boss Julen Lopetegui is eager to sign a top-class centre-back this summer and is reportedly competing with Liverpool for the 22-year-old Italian defender.

According to David Ornstein of The Athletic, Riccardo Calafiori is high on the Hammers’ radar and would be an exceptional addition to Lopetegui’s squad, particularly if signed alongside Max Kilman. The 22-year-old is primarily a left-footed centre-back but can also play as a left-back if needed.

Calafiori is known for his skill in possession and embodies the typical Italian defender: aggressive, tenacious, and with an excellent understanding of the game. After joining Bologna last summer, Thiago Motta transitioned him from left-back to centre-back, where he excelled and became one of Serie A’s standout performers.

Calafiori is believed to be available for just £34 million this summer, according to Calcio Mercato, making him a bargain in today’s market.

What Riccardo Calafiori Said About West Ham in 2022

Interestingly, Calafiori has expressed a particular fondness for West Ham. Whether due to Paolo Di Canio’s legendary status in East London or the club’s passionate fanbase and central London location, Calafiori’s admiration is clear.

During the World Cup in Qatar 18 months ago, while with Swiss club Basel, Calafiori mentioned his dream of moving to the Premier League, specifically naming West Ham as a desirable destination.

The Italy international said in 2022, “I have two images: going back to Italy, perhaps in Rome, or my dream would be to play in the Premier League. I really like West Ham or Chelsea.”

Given these comments, there is every reason for Lopetegui to pursue Calafiori for West Ham. Not only is he a top-notch defender, but he also has a genuine affection for the club and is available at an excellent price this summer.

Securing Riccardo Calafiori would be a tremendous boost for West Ham if Lopetegui, Tim Steidten, and the Hammers board can finalize the deal. There seems to be no reason not to make this transfer happen.
