Dan Bardell: Everton Secure ‘Long-Term Replacement for Onana’ with New Signing Awaiting Medical

Dan Bardell has endorsed Tim Iroegbunam as a suitable replacement for Amadou Onana at Everton, following reports of Iroegbunam’s imminent transfer from Aston Villa.

Fabrizio Romano reported on 20 June that Everton has agreed to a £9 million deal for the 20-year-old, with a medical examination pending. This marks the Toffees’ first summer signing amid ownership uncertainties, with Dan Friedkin potentially taking over.

Journalist Dan Bardell, from Sky Sports and talkSPORT, supports Iroegbunam as a potential successor to Onana, who has been linked with a move away from Goodison Park. In an exclusive interview with Goodison News, Bardell said, “Considering the inflated fees in today’s market, £9 million is a fair price for both Villa and Everton. It’s rare to find Premier League players for under £5 million, so this fee is understandable.

“Iroegbunam is a player with significant potential, natural talent, and many good attributes. He could serve as a long-term replacement for Onana if utilized correctly. Although still quite raw, he is highly regarded by his coaches, including Chris Brunt, who worked with him at West Brom.

“He hasn’t had the chance to showcase his abilities at Villa, but at Everton, he might be given the opportunity to grow. Sean Dyche’s system could potentially be easier for him to adapt to,” Bardell added.

The England youth international had limited opportunities to impress at Villa Park last season, making it difficult to fully assess his capabilities. Villa manager Unai Emery did not seem to favor Iroegbunam, even during injury crises late in the season.

This summer, Everton may need to sell key players like Jarrad Branthwaite or Onana, with Arsenal showing interest in the latter. If Onana departs, a gap would open in Dyche’s squad, and Iroegbunam could potentially step in to fill that void.

Despite his young age, Iroegbunam is a physically strong player with considerable ball-handling skills, making him a unique asset. He is not a traditional defensive midfielder like Onana, which could make him an ideal replacement for the Belgian at the relatively modest price of £9 million.
