Former Leeds United star set to join Leicester City after departing Championship club
A former Leeds star is poised for a Premier League transfer.
Former Leeds United man Andrew Hughes appears to be on the verge of joining Leicester City this summer. Hughes has been working at Norwich City and was part of David Wagner’s coaching staff last season as the Canaries reached the Championship play-offs.
However, reports suggest the 46-year-old has now left his position at Carrow Road and looks set to join up with Steve Cooper at Leicester. BBC Sport’s Nick Mashiter has reported that Hughes’ appointment to the Foxes’ backroom staff is now imminent.
Cooper has recently taken over at Leicester, replacing Enzo Maresca, who won the Championship title last season before moving to Chelsea. Cooper, with Hughes’ assistance, aims to keep Leicester in the Premier League and re-establish the newly promoted team as a top-flight club.
According to a Daily Mail report last week, Hughes also had interest from Brentford, with Thomas Frank looking to add to his coaching staff. Hughes has been a coach since retiring from playing in 2014, initially joining Bolton Wanderers as a youth team coach.
Since then, he has held various roles with Rotherham United, Crystal Palace, Huddersfield Town, Sheffield United, and Sheffield Wednesday before joining Norwich at the start of the 2021-22 campaign. He hopes to use his extensive experience to help Cooper guide Leicester in the right direction this season.
Hughes spent three and a half seasons as a player at Leeds United, where he quickly became a crowd favourite for his wholehearted performances. Joining the club in August 2007, Hughes was tasked with helping Dennis Wise’s side bounce back from relegation from the Championship.
He made 43 appearances in his first season with the club, although Leeds fell short in the play-offs. Two seasons later, Hughes played a key role in helping the Whites achieve promotion back to the second tier, with automatic promotion coming in 2010.
However, he left the club to join Scunthorpe United the following January, departing Leeds after making 139 appearances. His only goal for the club came in a 2-0 win against Millwall at The Den in 2008.
