The Yorkshire Evening Post journalist reported on Friday (5 July) that no progress has been made in extending the Scottish international’s stay at Elland Road this summer, despite ongoing talks.
While the 32-year-old player wishes to remain at Elland Road, a departure seems increasingly likely due to more attractive long-term offers from other clubs compared to what the Whites have proposed.
Earlier reports indicated that Leeds were eager to secure their captain with new terms after missing out on promotion [Leeds Live, 7 June]. However, reaching a deal now appears less probable.
Though Cooper is considered a modern-day Leeds United legend, the Whites shouldn’t be overly concerned about extending his stay now that his contract has expired.
Despite his significant behind-the-scenes role in last season’s promotion push, it’s evident that he is not a priority for Daniel Farke on the field, a situation that will likely persist with Joe Rodon’s return.
With Pascal Struijk back in action and Ethan Ampadu having taken over the captaincy during much of last year’s run-in, it might be best for all involved if Cooper signs a long-term deal elsewhere in the Championship.
This move would allow the 32-year-old to continue playing regular first-team football, as he is not yet ready to transition to a non-playing role. He still has much to offer as a defender at this level, just not with Leeds.
If this marks the end of his time with the Whites, his final game at Elland Road was a fitting farewell. He had the opportunity to say goodbye to the Leeds supporters with a brief appearance as Farke’s side secured their spot in the playoff final.
