Jamie Vardy and £40m Star Highlight Celtic’s Transfer Challenges as In-Demand Striker Proposed for Hoops
Jamie Vardy and a £40m transfer deal illustrate why Celtic would struggle to sign a player like Che Adams.
The Hoops are aiming to bolster their forward line this summer and have their sights on Adam Idah. He impressed on loan from Norwich City last season, and manager Brendan Rodgers is keen to reunite with the Republic of Ireland international. However, an alternative has been suggested.
Scotland striker Adams is reportedly wanted by Everton and Wolves after helping Southampton return to the Premier League last season. He also started every game for his country at Euro 2024. Former Hoops midfielder Simon Donnelly, speaking on Clyde 1, suggested that Adams should be pursued instead of Idah.
Referencing Leicester City legend Vardy and West Ham’s recent £40m deal for Max Kilman, Donnelly highlighted the financial challenges Celtic face compared to Premier League clubs. Donnelly said, “It goes back to Jamie Vardy, it’s the salaries. Listen, Celtic in the Champions League and everything that comes with it.
“But we have to just look at that transfer from Wolves to West Ham (Max Kilman). £40 million. That’s ridiculous. If there is interest down there and the salaries they can pay, then I would be surprised if somebody like Che Adams came to Scotland.
“It’s hard to compete with, it really is. I get how it is. I have played at Celtic. I know how great of a club it is. But these guys probably won’t get their head turned because of the finance they can achieve in a contract down there.”
