Stuart Pearce Perplexed by Latest Branthwaite Transfer News at Everton

According to Give Me Sport (9 July), Jarrad Branthwaite is reportedly very eager to join Manchester United this summer, with The Times (14 June) stating that personal terms have already been agreed upon.

However, negotiations between the two clubs have hit a snag as Everton is demanding a fee upwards of £70 million, while Manchester United’s most recent offer was reportedly £50 million (The Times).

Speaking on talkSPORT recently (9 July, 11:40am), Stuart Pearce commented on the situation, saying, “It’s unusual to agree on personal terms when he’s still an Everton player. But that’s another matter entirely. I know Sean Dyche will be determined to keep him. He had a fantastic season last year.”

Pearce further compared the situation to Harry Maguire’s transfer to Manchester United, noting the similarities in the fee expectations. He added, “I couldn’t put a price on players in this day and age. It’s a lot of money, but if he performs as expected, then maybe it’s justified.”

Branthwaite’s potential move to Old Trafford makes sense given Manchester United’s need to bolster their defense under new manager Erik ten Hag.

The 22-year-old had an impressive 2023/24 season alongside James Tarkowski and Jordan Pickford at Everton, contributing to their strong defensive record, with only Manchester City, Arsenal, and Liverpool conceding fewer goals.

His presence was crucial in Everton’s fight to avoid relegation, and it’s clear the club values him highly, as evidenced by their stance on the transfer fee.

Despite potential interest from other clubs, such as PSV, Everton seems determined to secure a significant fee for Branthwaite, indicating their resolve in negotiations.
