Leyton Orient manager Richie Wellens recognizes that on-loan Leeds United striker Sonny Perkins is not yet a finished product, reminding the player of this after a promising debut.
Perkins was anticipated to progress significantly after transferring from West Ham United to Elland Road in 2022. However, the pressure of Premier League play was considerable for any teenager. As a result, Perkins has only made four first-team appearances, primarily featuring for the Under-21s, failing to make an impression on Daniel Farke.
Now on loan for the second consecutive season, Leyton Orient is the latest club to take him on a temporary basis. The 20-year-old returns to the club where he played until age 14, seeking to regain his playing rhythm and goal-scoring touch.
Leyton Orient began their preparations for the upcoming campaign by defeating local non-league club Hornchurch FC 7-0 in their first pre-season match. Perkins scored the second goal, finishing from close range.
Asked for his initial assessment of the Leeds loanee, Wellens provided an honest evaluation.
“We’ve obviously watched Sonny a lot,” the manager said. “He played as a centre-forward for West Ham and is really good in and around the six-yard box and the penalty spot. There are loads of things we can work on and improve.”
Leeds undoubtedly recognize Perkins’ potential, and it’s a matter of him proving he can perform consistently at a high level this year. With his Elland Road contract set to expire next summer, his performances at Brisbane Road will likely determine any chance of renewal.
