West Ham United are reportedly in the lead to sign former Tottenham Hotspur winger Steven Bergwijn. Despite months of speculation, Bergwijn’s move to West Ham never happened, and rumors linking him to the club have decreased. However, the Hammers are still interested in adding a winger before the new season.
According to teamTALK, West Ham is leading the race to sign Bergwijn from Ajax. Last season, the Dutch winger contributed 16 goals in 24 Eredivisie games. Ajax is expected to demand between £20 and £25 million for his transfer.
Bergwijn’s impressive form has attracted interest from clubs in Saudi Arabia and France, so West Ham needs to act quickly if they want to secure his signature. Ajax manager Francesco Farioli has reportedly “given up all hope” of keeping Bergwijn. While lucrative offers from Saudi Arabia might tempt him, Bergwijn likely wants to prove himself in the Premier League again after not getting a fair chance at Tottenham.
West Ham has other transfer priorities, including a striker, a right-back, and ideally another central defender. Spending a significant amount on a winger might not be their top priority. However, if they decide to sign Bergwijn, they would be acquiring a player nearing his prime, which could turn out to be a great value for money.
