Raphinha Accepts Transfer as Former Leeds United Star Nears Premier League Return

Former Leeds United player Raphinha is reportedly open to returning to the Premier League this summer. Having left Leeds in 2022, the Brazilian winger has been linked with several English clubs, including Arsenal and Newcastle United.

A report by HITC suggests that Raphinha’s move back to England could cost around £50 million. The same report indicates that he is now considering leaving Barcelona to return to the British Isles. This development coincides with Barcelona’s interest in signing Spain international and Euro 2024 star Nico Williams.

Williams is reportedly Barcelona’s top transfer target this summer. While the Athletic Club winger has attracted interest from various clubs across Europe and the Premier League, he appears keen on joining Barcelona. His arrival would likely demote Raphinha in the pecking order at the Catalan club. Furthermore, the rise of Lamine Yamal on the right side of Hansi Flick’s lineup could limit Raphinha’s playing time. This situation persists despite earlier reports suggesting that Flick viewed the 27-year-old as a key player for the upcoming season.

Raphinha has acknowledged the situation, and the report claims he now sees a move away from Barcelona as beneficial for his career. Several Premier League clubs are reportedly interested in securing his signature.

The winger spent two seasons with Leeds United, making 67 appearances before his transfer to Barcelona. Over the same period at Barcelona, he has scored 20 goals in 87 matches, including 14 appearances in UEFA competitions. He also contributed to Barcelona’s successes, helping them win the league in 2022-23 and the Spanish Super Cup in 2023. Despite his achievements, Raphinha has faced criticism and persistent transfer rumors during his time at the club.

Last month, Brazilian and Barcelona legend Rivaldo openly criticized Raphinha in the Spanish press. The Ballon d’Or winner expressed his disappointment: “We expected more from Raphinha at Barcelona,” Rivaldo told Sport. “Everyone knows he’s a great player with great quality. He’s got a lot of good football. As for his departure, it’s a complicated moment. It’s all up to him. If you stay at Barca, it’s to be a starter. Because if you don’t manage to get a lot of games together, people doubt your ability, and then all this starts: rumors about your possible departure.”
