The 24-year-old forward, who recently became a free agent after leaving Leeds United, has signed a three-year contract with Sunderland, with an option for an additional year. Sunderland managed to secure the highly sought-after player, beating Championship rivals, including Sheffield Wednesday, to his signature.
Poveda brings extensive Championship experience to Sunderland from previous loan spells with Sheffield Wednesday, Blackpool, and Blackburn. He also has Premier League experience, having made 14 appearances during his time at Leeds.

I’m a creative player with strong one-on-one skills and am never hesitant to take on opponents. I’m committed to working hard for the team and excited to begin this new chapter.”
Sunderland’s sporting director, Kristjaan Speakman, commented: “We have closely monitored his performances in the Championship and are thrilled to sign him. He excels in one-on-one situations, has the pace to alter the pace of play, and offers versatility in attacking positions. Poveda’s football journey includes stints with Chelsea, Arsenal, Barcelona, Brentford, and Manchester City in the youth ranks. He made his senior debut for Manchester City in the Carabao Cup during the 2018/19 season and joined Leeds United in January 2020, though he struggled to make a significant impact at Elland Road.
Former Sunderland manager Tony Mowbray, who previously managed Poveda during his loan at Blackburn, attempted to re-sign him in January while at Birmingham City.
However, Poveda chose Sheffield Wednesday, where he made 10 appearances and impressed enough for Owls boss Danny Rohl to prioritize his permanent signing this summer.
Despite this, Rohl indicated earlier this week that Wednesday might miss out on Poveda, with Sunderland ultimately securing the player.
With Poveda now on board, Sunderland is focusing on strengthening their frontline further. They have shown interest in Alexandre Mendy of Caen and have held discussions, though no agreement has been reached yet. Mendy, 30, has been training alone and did not join the Caen squad for their pre-season trip to Switzerland.
Caen manager Nicolas Seube remarked this week: “I hope that upon our return, either an agreement will be reached, or Alex will rejoin the team. It’s important for his own well-being as well.”
The Guinea-Bissau international, who has publicly expressed his desire to join Sunderland, scored 22 goals in 37 appearances in the French second tier last season.
