The 22-year-old emerged as one of the Premier League’s best young defenders last season after a superb campaign at Goodison Park.
United made two bids for the center-half following the 2023-24 season: the first worth £35 million with £10 million in add-ons, and the second at £45 million plus £5 million in add-ons. Both offers were swiftly rejected, as Everton values Branthwaite at £70 million.
Branthwaite agreed to personal terms with United and was offered a deal worth £160,000 per week, a significant increase from his current £70,000 per week at Everton. The Toffees are eager to secure their prized asset with a new contract, and talks are expected to take place in the coming weeks.
However, The Daily Mail reports that Branthwaite will resist signing a new deal unless Everton can match United’s proposal. While still interested, United has stepped back from transfer talks for the time being.
United aims to sign another center-half and remains in talks with Bayern Munich over Matthijs de Ligt, with an initial offer of around £30 million falling short of the German side’s valuation last week.
Strengthening their defense is a key priority for United this summer. Raphael Varane left the club following the end of his contract, and Willy Kambwala was sold to Villarreal. Victor Lindelof is among those up for sale, and the club is also open to offers for Harry Maguire.
Additionally, United is keen on signing a full-back due to concerns over Luke Shaw’s long-term fitness. Tyrell Malacia, who has been out for a year, is still not back in full training.
