West Ham’s transfer activity, led by director Tim Steidten, has resulted in six new first-team signings: Max Kilman, Crysencio Summerville, Niclas Fullkrug, Luis Guilherme, Guido Rodriguez, and Wes Foderingham, all joining on permanent deals.
Despite spending over £100 million, the club is still in the market for another experienced central defender.
According to Sky Sports Germany’s Florian Plettenberg, West Ham have identified former Borussia Dortmund star Mats Hummels as their ideal target.
Hummels, a free agent after his contract with Dortmund expired, is one of Europe’s most experienced players with over 620 senior matches under his belt.
At 35, he brings a wealth of experience and could be a valuable addition to West Ham’s defense.
To secure Hummels, West Ham must convince the six-time Bundesliga winner to postpone any retirement plans and join them on a likely short-term deal.
If manager Julen Lopetegui can persuade him to continue playing, West Ham will be well-positioned to sign the veteran defender, especially after Bologna withdrew their interest.
Hummels has enjoyed a distinguished career, winning 17 major trophies, including the 2014 World Cup with Germany.
