Why Everton Rejected Marseille’s Transfer Offer for Neal Maupay

Everton have turned down an offer from Marseille for Neal Maupay.

The French club was interested in securing the 28-year-old striker on a season-long loan, but, as first reported by The Athletic, Everton declined the proposal.

Maupay began last season with Everton, featuring in their first match against Wolverhampton Wanderers.

However, he was loaned back to his former club, Brentford, later in the summer.

Although Maupay had a relatively successful spell, scoring eight goals in 34 appearances, Brentford chose not to trigger the clause to make his move permanent, despite his contributions helping the club maintain their Premier League status amidst injuries to key players.

Maupay returned to Everton and was included in their squad for the season opener against Brighton and Hove Albion.

However, his future at the club remains uncertain. He is now in the final year of his contract with Everton, although the club holds an option to extend it for another year next summer.

This contractual situation has complicated Marseille’s offer, as their loan proposal included an option to buy Maupay at the end of the season.

To facilitate this, Everton would need to extend his contract to secure a transfer fee.

Everton is reportedly aiming to arrange a permanent transfer for Maupay.

Meanwhile, Marseille is seeking a forward on loan after Faris Moumbagna sustained a significant knee injury in the club’s first Ligue 1 match of the season.
