Sky Sports Germany reported on 24 August that Borussia Monchengladbach are interested in bringing back defender Max Wober on a second loan deal, following his stint with them last season.
Wober, who has yet to make an appearance in the Championship under Daniel Farke, is open to returning to Monchengladbach, but discussions between the clubs have not yet begun.
Earlier this month, Farke indicated that a conversation with Wober had convinced him that the 26-year-old was committed to staying at Leeds United this season [Yorkshire Evening Post, 8 August].
This was notable given Wober’s unexpected departure last summer, despite initial indications that he would remain.
A year ago, Wober might have been a key figure in Leeds’ defense for the new Championship season. However, his stock seems to have fallen during his time away in Germany.
While Farke might believe in Wober’s commitment, YEP’s Graham Smyth raised doubts about the Austrian international’s dedication on 8 August, especially when compared to Brenden Aaronson, another player who returned.
Aaronson has featured in all three league games so far and scored two goals, contrasting with Wober’s limited involvement.
Wober has played just over an hour in the Carabao Cup loss to Middlesbrough and missed the Sheffield Wednesday win due to injury [Adam Pope, 21 August].
With Joe Rodon and Pascal Struijk solidly positioned as starting center-backs, and Ethan Ampadu likely to start over Wober if needed, Wober’s opportunities appear limited.
Junior Firpo has also secured the left-back position.
Given the current situation, if Wober was uncertain about staying a year ago, it would not be surprising if he sought to leave now.
However, unless there is an exit clause, a simple loan may not offer much benefit to Leeds.
If Wober were causing issues behind the scenes, Leeds might prefer to move him on, but there has been no evidence of such behavior.
As the transfer window nears its end, the possibility of Wober’s departure seems to be growing, and the final days could see significant activity at Elland Road in both directions.
