Leeds Advised to Break Championship Transfer Record to Finalize Signing After Bid Submitted – Report
According to Alan Nixon, Sheffield United have demanded a record-breaking £18 million from Leeds United to secure Gustavo Hamer’s transfer this summer.
The Sun journalist reported on August 27 that Leeds United would need to offer £18 million or more to sign the 27-year-old midfielder, setting a new record transfer fee for a Championship club.
Daniel Farke’s team had their initial £13 million bid for the Dutchman rejected [The Star, August 26].
However, Nixon suggests that increasing the offer by £5 million could secure the deal for Gustavo Hamer.
Sheffield United, who have been inundated with inquiries from Leeds about their key players, are dealing with ongoing transfer interest.
Despite Jamie Shackleton’s move south to Sheffield following his contract expiration, Leeds quickly resumed talks for right-back Jayden Bogle.
Leeds is considering paying £5 million for Bogle rather than the £7 million initially demanded by Chris Wilder [Nixon, July 20].
Nonetheless, the club may hesitate to meet the £18 million asking price for Hamer, especially with the transfer deadline approaching on August 30.
A move for Hamer would surpass the current record set by Wolves, who paid £15.8 million for Ruben Neves in 2017.
However, Hamer’s potential impact could be comparable to Neves’, who played a key role in Wolves’ promotion to the Premier League in the 2017/18 season.
Similarly, Hamer could significantly enhance Leeds’ midfield as they aim to improve upon their play-off final defeat from May.
