Keith Wyness: Leicester Could Face a Second Points Deduction
Former Everton chief Keith Wyness warns Leicester City could be nearing the profit and sustainability (PSR) limit again this season.
On the latest edition of Football Insider’s Inside Track podcast, the 66-year-old former Everton CEO, who now runs a football consultancy advising elite clubs, warned that Leicester City could face another points deduction as they await the outcome of their first spending breach case.
In March, Leicester was charged with breaching the Premier League’s profit and sustainability rules (PSR) for the 2022-23 season.
The club argued that they were not a Premier League team when they submitted their accounts on June 30, 2022, following their relegation.
However, in July, an independent commission dismissed this claim and ruled that Leicester could still be charged by the Premier League, a decision the club has appealed.
Leicester reported losses of £89.7 million for 2022-23, while Premier League clubs are allowed to lose only £105 million over three years.
Despite their financial issues, Steve Cooper’s team spent over £70 million on nine new players during the summer transfer window.
Wyness suggested that this summer’s spending could put Leicester in danger of further PSR violations this season.
He told the Football Insider’s Inside Track podcast: “They are going to be sailing very close to that PSR line.
Although they managed to make a few sales, we need to watch this closely, and I’m sure they will be.”
“Hopefully, they have enough common sense to stay within the limits. But there’s a risk of another points deduction, so we’ll have to see how it unfolds.”
Leicester’s financial strategy will be crucial as they navigate these challenges and attempt to avoid further penalties.
