Opinion: Little-known Leeds talent with ‘immense potential’ could step up to fill the void left by transfer shortfall
Leeds United experienced a rather unusual summer transfer window, marked by the departure of several big names from Elland Road.
Archie Gray’s transfer to Tottenham kicked off a series of moves that saw Crysencio Summerville and Georginio Rutter also returning to the Premier League.
While Gray’s departure was a blow for Leeds fans, it was necessary to meet the EFL’s Profit and Sustainability regulations, according to The Athletic (September 3).
The exit of midfielder Glen Kamara further complicated matters for Leeds manager Daniel Farke, who suddenly found himself with two significant gaps in his starting lineup.
Although Leeds secured Joe Rothwell and Ao Tanaka as replacements, the team’s depth remains concerning.
Outside of Ethan Ampadu, there is little cover if either Rothwell or Tanaka suffers an injury, leaving fans puzzled as to why an additional central midfielder wasn’t signed.
Dejan Ljubicic was reportedly close to a move to West Yorkshire, as noted by BILD (August 30), but the deal didn’t materialize, with a potential transfer now being pushed to January.
Until then, Leeds may look to their young talent, Charlie Crew, to step up.
Farke has praised Crew, noting that he is “full of potential.”
Charlie Crew has been a regular in Leeds’ matchday squad this season, missing out only once after limited appearances in the previous campaign.
Though he has yet to make his senior debut, his consistent presence on the bench reflects Farke’s confidence in him.
Crew’s potential has also been recognized at the international level, as he has been called up to represent Wales in their upcoming matches against Turkey and Montenegro.
Crew’s selection for the Welsh national team underscores his talent and suggests he could play a crucial role for Leeds if needed this season.
If Rothwell, Ampadu, or Tanaka were to be sidelined, Farke could find some relief knowing Crew is ready to step in.
The extent of Crew’s involvement over the season remains to be seen, but with careful integration into the team, Leeds could potentially nurture another rising star similar to Archie Gray.
