Newcastle United Intensify Interest in Liverpool’s Harvey Elliott, Reveals TBR Football
Eddie Howe has so far endured a frustrating summer in his pursuit of a new right-sided forward for Newcastle United.
The Magpies were interested in signing Bryan Mbeumo from Brentford, but the club backed away after being deterred by the Frenchman’s hefty price tag.
A similar scenario unfolded with Brighton & Hove Albion’s Joao Pedro, who is now on his way to Chelsea.
Although Newcastle were admirers of Pedro, they refused to meet Brighton’s £60 million valuation.
Now, attention has turned to Liverpool midfielder Harvey Elliott, who has reportedly climbed high on Newcastle’s shortlist.
According to Graeme Bailey, chief correspondent for TBR Football, the club had already been monitoring Elliott even before it became known that Liverpool were open to letting him go this summer.
Elliott, 22, is said to be seeking regular first-team football after finding his opportunities limited under new Liverpool boss Arne Slot.
This desire has only increased interest in the former Fulham star, who impressed mightily during the U21 European Championship, helping England secure the title in Slovakia.
TBR Football recently reported that several Premier League clubs are tracking Elliott, with Newcastle now believed to be preparing a formal move.
Liverpool, for their part, are looking to secure around £50 million for the young midfielder, although he is expected to command at least £40 million from potential suitors.
The competition for Elliott’s signature isn’t limited to England. German side RB Leipzig are also showing interest, reportedly motivated in part by the influence of former Liverpool manager Jürgen Klopp.
England U21 coach Lee Carsley was among those to heap praise on Elliott during the tournament. Speaking before the final against Germany, Carsley said: “Harvey has been outstanding.
He’s one of many who has stepped up. They’re developing as a team and it’s a shame we’ve only got one game left because this team is outstanding.”
Despite his talent, Elliott has yet to fully break into Liverpool’s star-studded lineup. That may now benefit Newcastle, who could take advantage of his situation to strengthen their squad after a slow start to the transfer window.
