Derrick White addressed the media during shootaround today, marking his first public appearance since being named Eastern Conference Player of the Week. However, he humbly expressed that he believed his teammate, Payton Pritchard, deserved the recognition instead.
“Frankly, I felt Payton should have been the one to receive the award,” White conveyed to reporters.
During the games from March 18 to 24, White averaged impressive stats of 20.3 points, 8.8 assists, and 6.5 rebounds, contributing significantly to the Celtics’ four consecutive victories. On the other hand, Pritchard posted slightly lower yet comparable numbers, with averages of 19.3 points, 7 assists, and 3.3 rebounds during the undefeated run. Although both were nominated for the Eastern Conference Player of the Week, White emerged as the winner.
White acknowledged the team’s role in earning him this recognition, which marked his first of the season and second in his career.
“It’s quite gratifying,” he expressed. “I’m simply grateful to be part of this team, and our 4-0 record while I played was a major factor in it.”
With Jrue Holiday absent from all four games last week, White and Pritchard had more opportunities to showcase their skills. Additionally, Jaylen Brown and Jayson Tatum each missed one game within that timeframe.
“When more players are sidelined, you naturally get more chances and room to be more assertive,” White commented when asked about his tendency to step up when the team faces absences. “It’s just a matter of being aggressive and seizing the opportunities presented.”
