Everton’s recent struggles in the Premier League, suffering back-to-back defeats, have underlined the lack of depth and quality within their squad.

One name that has emerged as a potential target is James Ward-Prowse — a player Moyes knows very well from his days at West Ham United.

The Scottish manager signed the midfielder from Southampton for £30 million in 2023, and now he could look to bring him to Merseyside in a bid to rejuvenate Everton’s midfield.

According to The Times, West Ham are open to selling Ward-Prowse in January, with the 30-year-old having been frozen out since Nuno Espírito Santo took charge in late September.

The midfielder has not made a single matchday squad under Nuno, suggesting that he does not fit into the Portuguese coach’s plans.

Ward-Prowse is vastly experienced, boasting over 400 Premier League appearances, and is widely regarded as one of the best set-piece specialists in English football.

His ability to create chances and score from distance could provide the Toffees with a much-needed creative spark in midfield.

Former Everton scout Bryan King, speaking exclusively to Goodison News, believes that Ward-Prowse would be an ideal signing for the club, particularly with Idrissa Gana Gueye expected to be away at the Africa Cup of Nations in early 2025.

“A move to Everton would certainly give him a new lease of life,” King said. “He’s far too good a player to be left out of the West Ham squad.

Once things become personal between a manager and a player, there’s often no way back, and if that’s the case here, then Ward-Prowse needs to move on. Everton would be the perfect destination.

He could fill in for Gueye during AFCON, and his quality on the ball and set-piece ability would add real value to the team.”

Tensions between Ward-Prowse and Nuno reportedly stem from their time together at Nottingham Forest, where the midfielder’s loan spell was cut short after just ten appearances.

Since Nuno’s appointment at West Ham, their working relationship has not improved, making a January exit highly likely.
