Everton staff hold big expectations for Isaac Heath
Isaac Heath, who was named Everton’s Under-21 Player of the Season last year, was rewarded with first-team minutes during pre-season.
Supporters took notice of his ability, particularly when he won a penalty after a brilliant solo run against Accrington Stanley in the summer.
Despite the flashes of quality, David Moyes and his coaching staff believed a loan move would accelerate his development, so Heath sealed a deadline-day switch to Accrington.
Since then, manager John Doolan has gradually integrated him into the side, offering a couple of starts and trusting him in Saturday’s 1-0 victory over Colchester.
The 2004-born midfielder made an instant impression at his new club, scoring on his debut. His third outing saw him complete the full 90 minutes, where he was named Man of the Match.
Accrington supporters are already tipping him to go on and become a “top player,” while Doolan himself has not held back in his praise.
Speaking after the Colchester win, the manager described Heath as an “unbelievable talent,” highlighting the winger’s influence on their attacking play.
“We had chance after chance,” Doolan said. “I think we won every first contact, picked up the second balls, and worked the ball into wide areas with Isaac Heath, who is an unbelievable talent.”
Meanwhile, Moyes will be keeping a close watch on the youngster’s progress.
Accrington’s location makes it easy for the Everton boss to monitor him directly, just as he previously managed with Harrison Armstrong at Preston, chosen partly for its proximity to Merseyside. It seems Everton adopted the same logic when sending Heath to Accrington.
At 20 years old, Heath’s start to life in League Two has been hugely encouraging. However, if he is to establish himself as a future Everton first-team player, a further loan at a higher level could be the natural next step, perhaps next season.
A January move cannot be ruled out either, depending on whether Everton retain the option to recall him from Accrington.
For now, though, Heath is making a strong impression and showing why many believe he has the potential to shine at Goodison Park in the years ahead.
