“New Referee Verdict on Jordan Ayew and Jamie Vardy Penalty Box Incidents in Leicester City Match”

Former Premier League referee Dermot Gallagher has shared his opinion on two key incidents in Leicester City’s thrilling 3-2 comeback win over Southampton.

Leicester overturned a 2-0 deficit to claim victory in the Premier League.

Facundo Buonanotte, on loan, scored his third goal of the season at the 64-minute mark, sparking hope for Steve Cooper’s side.

Jamie Vardy then equalized with a penalty after Southampton’s Ryan Fraser held him back in the box, resulting in Fraser’s red card.

Commenting on the Vardy penalty during Sky Sports’ Ref Watch, Gallagher said, “Fraser stops Vardy from putting the ball in the back of the net, pulls him back, and prevents him from kicking the ball.

It’s a clear foul, so a penalty and a red card for denying a clear goalscoring opportunity.”

Jordan Ayew became the match-winner with a late goal, but he was also involved in a contentious moment while Leicester trailed 2-1.

He pulled Paul Onuachu’s shirt inside Leicester’s penalty area during a Southampton corner, leading to debate over whether a penalty should have been awarded.

Gallagher added, “I thought it was a penalty. If you hold a player’s shirt for five steps, as he did, that’s a penalty.

“I don’t think it would have been given even if Onuachu went down, because the officials said it didn’t affect his chance to get the ball.

The goalkeeper had already claimed it.

They believe the goalkeeper would have gotten the ball regardless.

But in my view, holding a player’s shirt for more than five steps is enough to warrant a penalty.”
